A woman's workout should consist of leg raises, biceps curls with
soup cans, and triceps kickbacks with water bottles.
Can you believe that silliness?
Neither can I, but that is what passes for "professional fitness
advice for women" these days.
I could see this info being accepted in the 1930's (maybe?), but in the year 2007? Please...
Does anyone really believe that biceps curls with water bottles is going to prepare women to carry their children to bed, a bag of heavy groceries in from the car, or swing a sledgehammer during home reno's?
No way. You need real-world workouts and fat loss advice. Not fluff.
Am I the only one that finds those types of recommendations
disrespectful to the physical capabilities of women? You'd think
that Linda Hamilton's chin-up scene in Terminator 2 would have turned the tide of female fitness, or perhaps Demi Moore's GI Jane.
I've watched women get fit fast at almost any age with Turbulence Training. In fact, we've had girls from 18 to 82 years young kickin' butt with Turbulence Training.
Today, I want to share the story of a classic "supermom", you know the mom with 3 active kids that has to drive them everywhere, eat on the run, and still find room for workouts. Her name is Brandy Kirton, and she'll show you how real women train, eat, and find the time to do it all with proper planning.
CB: Brandy, tell us about your past exercise and nutrition experiences. At what point did you find out about Turbulence Training and what persuaded you to start using it?
BK:
I started working out back on high school. I'm 30 now.
I became a personal trainer for a few years in my early 20's. So I learned a lot about nutrition and weight training. I have been in great shape and not so great shape in the last 10 years. I think I found Turbulence Training just surfing the web and decided to give it a try. I was desperate to lose weight after my 3rd kid.
CB: And how was this a change from what you had done in the past?
BK:
I was doing 30 minutes of cardio and then lifted for 30 mins
3 to 4 times a week. That was if I actually could make time.

I would not work out if I knew I couldnt get it all in. I would
think, "What's the point of 20 mins?".

CB: What kind of results have you achieved with Turbulence Training? And is there anything else, besides the results, you love about the Turbulence Training programs?
BK:
I love how it changes every month so I never get bored. I also love that I have no excuse about not having time to fit it in.
My results have been great. I am getting toned up and consistently loosing inches. I also have a lot more energy.
CB: Do you workout at home or in a gym?
BK:
I have to work out at home. No time to get to a gym.
CB: Has Turbulence Training had a positive impact on your lifestyle?
BK:
Turbulence Training has made a huge impact on me. I dont feel like it takes up my whole day or get bored of the same thing day in and day out.
I feel strong and love the daily emails. It helps me stay motivated.
I work full time, have three kids 9, 5, and 11 months, and a
husband. My older two kids play every sports so there really
is no extra time.
I have to get up at 5:30 to work out before they wake up but its
worth it. I feel great after I am done and no matter what happens that day I have already got my work out in which feels great.
CB: Do you have any social support? If so, how has this helped
you?
BK: My mom comes over in the mornings to work out with me. I need that accountability so that I don't sleep instead. Its hard to get up but I always feel so much better when I do.
CB: What are your daily obstacles and temptations that you have to avoid with respect to nutrition and training? And what
strategies do you use?
BK:
With all the practices, games and running around I have to do its hard not to grab McDonald's with the kids.
I try to either bring food with me or wait until I get home. If I
have to eat out I do try and find grilled chicken or subway.
CB: How do you plan your nutrition?
BK:
I have to go shopping on Sunday to stock up on all my healthy
food. Otherwise I will eat whatever I can find which usually is not good for me.
CB: Thanks Brandy, keep up the great work.
****
The message is clear. Plan, prepare, commit, and be consistent.
Brandy didn't use any magic pills or potions to succeed, she simply found a great workout plan, and did what she had to do.
As a supermom, Brandy practically has to create time out of thin air in order to do her workout, but again, she knows what she has to do and she does it. She's committed. She has social support. She knows the correct options for eating on the run.
She has made the effort to plan for the obstacles (lack of time,
workout motivation) that we all come across. And by doing that,
she's cleared a simple path to success.
And she doesn't waste time in the gym with slow, boring cardio
workouts. Instead, she sculpts her body in half the time with the
Turbulence Training workouts.

7-Day Motivational Weight Loss Guide
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

Fat loss is hard. And once in a while, everyone loses their
motivation for diet and exercise. So that's why I'm bringing you 7 tips to help you lose more fat in less time over this upcoming
week.
(If you are a complete beginner, please refer to the 21-day
quickstart guide in the Turbulence Training manual for more details on how to develop key healthy habits during the essential start-up phase of your fat loss program.)
If you're a M-F, 9-5 employee, you know that Saturday or Sunday has to be your day to hit the grocery store and get fresh meat and produce to prepare your meals for the next week.
I'm a big fan of picking up some fresh salmon fillets and asparagus for Sunday dinner. Chicken breasts can be cooked in bunches for freezing and then used over the week as easy lunchtime protein sources. Fruits and vegetables are washed and prepared for cooking or snacking, and almonds, pecans, walnuts, and organic beef jerky are packed into travel bags for when I'm on the go.
Prepare and succeed. It's that easy.
So print this out, put it on your fridge, and let it guide you to
your fat loss goals, while keeping your workouts fun and motivating.
Now here we go with our day-by-day guide...
MONDAY
On Monday, your motivation will be high to have a great Turbulence Training Workout.
Plan to set a personal record in your workout today. If you are a
beginner, that might mean using a higher level on the cardio
machine for 1-2 minutes, or doing 2-3 extra pushups per set. For the advanced fat loss program, it might mean using 2.5 more pounds per dumbbell in your split squats, or extending your intervals by 5 seconds per sprint.
By continuously aiming to achieve a personal best in your workouts, you will ensure that you are pushing your body to adapt - to change for the better.
Now you don't have to set a record on every set for every exercise. Just pick one record that you want to break each workout. Aim for constant improvement.
TUESDAY
This will be an off-day from your Turbulence Training schedule, but you should still get 30 minutes of activity. Make it as fun as
possible. Take the dog for a walk, play your favorite sport, or
chase your kids.
Even walking for 30 minutes is great. It will help you recover from Monday's workout and simply improves your overall health. If you're looking for an advanced fat loss option, use a bodyweight circuit to boost your metabolism.
Also, I want you to make a big nutrition change on this day and
eliminate all sources of trans-fatty acids from your diet.
Read your food labels, and don't eat anything that contains
hydrogenated oils. Also, be sure to look at the breakdown of fats - if the total fat content is greater than the sum of the saturated
and unsaturated fat contents, then the product contains trans-fats.
Remember that labels are sneaky!
A label can boast "0g Trans Fat" if there is less than 0.5g of
Trans-fats per serving. But if there are several servings in a bag, and you eat the whole bag...guess what? You could have eaten 2-3 grams of trans-fats!
And trans-fats will kill ya. As Dr. Bruce Holub from the University of Guelph says, "there is no safe level of the fats and food producers should cease and desist the industrial production of trans fats in the country."
WEDNESDAY
Perform your regularly schedule strength and interval training
workout. And if you need to, purchase a new cooking
appliance, such as a grill or steamer to help you prepare healthy,
nutritious, low-fat protein sources or high-fiber, nutrient rich
vegetables in a convenient manner.
Healthy food preparation is a SMALL effort for a LARGE reward.
THURSDAY
30 minutes of activity, anyway that you can get it. And then at
dinner, try a new source of lean protein, such as salmon, bison, or ostrich (or switch back to lean, red meat if you're bored of
chowing down on chicken).
FRIDAY
Have another great strength and interval workout. Since this is
your Turbulence Training workout of the week...have fun and reward yourself with a superset of your 2 favorite exercises. It's a perfect time to add some extra work for your arms and abs, if you love training those muscle groups. Just do something you really like. You've earned it. Training should be fun AND effective.
SATURDAY
30 minutes of activity. It's the weekend, find something fun to do with a friend. On weekends, I try and get into the gym with an old friend and amaze them with several bodyweight exercises that they have never seen before - such as Spiderman Pushups, Inverted Rows, and single-leg squats.
Then check-in with your social support group (in-person or on the Internet) to talk about the ups and downs you went through this week. Share recipes, tips and tricks to turning aside temptations, and motivate each other to stay strong for another 7-days of fat-burning with the TT lifestyle.
SUNDAY
Get in another 30 minutes of exercise nice and early to start your day. Then plan your shopping list, head on to the grocery store or even better a fresh, open market and get your weekly produce and lean protein sources.
Make sure to include 1 new vegetable and 1 new source of lean
protein in your purchases.
One big step everyday towards a better body!
Another week and another pound or two of fat should be hitting the road. Keep up the great work!
Sincerely,

The Evolution of Cardio
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

I've been meaning to write this email for a long time. Today I'm
going to give you the story of how I solved the problem of getting an efficient and effective fat loss program finished in 45 minutes. Essentially, how I invented Turbulence Training.
And then I'll end with a sample TT workout for you...
But first, let's take a tr
98-99. I was but a lowly grad student, studying the effects of
androstenedione (the supplement taken by the might Mark McGwire during his record-breaking home run quest in '98).
In my study (which was published in the Canadian Journal of Applied Physiology for any science nerds like myself out there), we had guys use the supplement and go through a couple of weight training sessions. By February of '99 I was stuck in the lab, analyzing the blood samples using some fancy radio-active isotopes.
And when I say stuck in the lab, I mean STUCK. I'd get there at
7am, and record my last data point at 11pm. Sixteen hours of
mad science. And if I wasn't there, I was downstairs in the
medical library, studying papers on testosterone and training.
Now coming from a very athletic background, this sedentary
lifestyle didn't sit well with me. But there I was, studing for a
degree in Exercise Physiology and left with no time for exercise.
Or so I thought.
Fortunately, I actually had a 50 minute window once per day of
"down-time" while the lab's gamma-counter analyzed blood samples.
That left me 50 minutes to get to the gym (5 minutes across campus) and get a workout in the remaining 40 or so minutes. I knew that if I applied my studies to the workout, I could get maximum results in minimum time.
As a former athlete, I knew that I had to find a way to stay fit
and to avoid the fat gain that comes with working long hours in a
sedentary environment. And I also had to stay true to the
high-school bodybuilder I once was, so there was no way I was
willing to sacrifice my muscle to one of those long-cardio, low
protein fat-loss plans that were popular at the time.
Instead, I had to draw on my academic studies and my experiences working with athletes as the school's Strength & Conditioning Coach.
I knew that sprint intervals were associated with more fat loss
than slow cardio, and I knew that you could also increase aerobic fitness by doing sprints (but you can't increase sprint performance by doing aerobic training).
So clearly, intervals were (and ARE!) superior to long slow cardio.
I had seen first hand the incredible results of sprint intervals in
the summer and fall, as the athletes made huge fitness improvements and shed winter fat in a short time using my interval programs. I knew that intervals had to be the next step in the evolution of cardio.
The biggest benefit of intervals? A lot of results in a short
amount of time. I knew that I only had 40 minutes to train, and
therefore I could only spend 15-20 minutes doing intervals.
Now onto the strength training portion of the workouts. I knew that a high-volume bodybuilding program wasn't going to cut it - I just didn't have time. But in the past year I had read so many lifting studies, that I knew exactly what exercises I needed to do to maximize my lifting time in the gym.
Those exercises were standing, multi-muscle, movements such as squats, presses, rows, power cleans, and plenty of other standing single-leg exercises. I knew that those exercises would bring me far more results than those people sitting on machines would ever achieve.
And I also knew that I had to lift heavier than the average Joe or Jane Gym-goer lifts. I just knew that doing lighter weights and high-reps wasn't going to cut it. And a research study from 2001 later showed that I was right - when women did 8 reps per set, they had a significantly greater increase in post-workout metabolism than if they did 15 reps per set.
So I had my plan. Bust my tail over to the gym, through the cold, dreary Canadian winter afternoon, and do a quick but thorough warmup (specific to my lifts - none of that 5 minutes on the treadmill waste of time).
Once I got through the warm-up, I did as many sets as I could in the remainder of the 20 minutes for strength training.
At that point, I knew that supersets were the only way to go if I
wanted to maximize the number of sets I could do...so the
non-competing superset of Turbulence Training was put in place.
By non-competing, I mean that the 2 exercises in the superset don't interfere with one another. So you can use upper and lower body exercises together, or pushing and pulling exercises. Just be careful not to use two grip-intensive exercises together in a superset - otherwise, one exercise will suffer, if not both.
And then I followed up the strength training with intervals, as I
knew these had to follow the lifting, otherwise it would not be the correct exercise order. Remember, intervals first leads to
premature fatigue. Lift first, cardio later. Forget that old wives
tale about doing cardio first to burn more fat. That's junk.
You know, I remember the exact day and exact workout that this all came together into the Turbulence Training program. It hit me as I was finishing my intervals. I knew I had found something that was like fat loss magic.
Unfortunately, I couldn't find a way to put it in a pill. But I've
been able to put it down on paper in all of the TT manuals.
The exact workout I used that day went like this...
Warm-up
1 set of Bodyweight Squats
1 set of pushups
1 set of Squats with the empty bar
1 set of light dumbbell chest presses
1 set of moderate weight barbell squats
1 set of moderate weight dumbbell chest presses
Strength Training Superset #1
Barbell Squats paired with Dumbbell Chest Presses
3 supersets, aiming for 8 reps per side per set
Strength Training Superset #2
DB Rows paired with Barbell Forward Lunges
3 supersets, aiming for 8 reps per set
Stationary Bike Intervals
After a warmup, I did 6 intervals of 45 seconds work and 45 seconds rest, finishing with a cool-down.
And from that point in time, I've tried to share this and all the
other Turbulence Training workouts with as many men and women as possible. The same men and women that I would see day-in and day-out performing the same ineffective slow-cardio fat loss programs, and not making a darn change month after month. And every day they would see me, soaked in sweat, feeling great and looking lean, and finishing another TT workout.
Eventually I noticed these other men and women weren't around as consistently as before, and then soon enough they would drop out completely - after all, they weren't getting results with their slow cardio and aerobics classes (yep, those were still around in '99!).
And so here we are today...thousands of TT users later, with
national fitness magazines like Men's Health, Men's Fitness, and
Shape spreading the good word about Turbulence Training.
Thousands of TT users, dozens of personal trainers, and even
several national fitness magazines all agree with me, Turbulence
Training is the #1 way to fast fat loss.
Thanks for being a part of the TT Lifestyle Revolution, and for
sharing this new and improved fat loss training and cardio system with the world.
So when you see someone frustrated with their ineffective fat loss program, tell them there is a better way. It's research-based, efficient, and most of all, effective. And yes, it goes against the crowd. But it works.
And it's now better than ever,
Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS

PS - Don't know where to start?
If you are a beginner, start by reading Dr. Mohr's nutrition
guidelines...eating properly will be the biggest factor in your
early success.
Beginners should also start with the Introductory TT workouts to prepare their muscles for the upcoming intense training.
For others, it's best to start with the Intermediate Level TT
workouts. If those aren't enough of a challenge, you can move onto the Original TT workout and follow the 16-week advanced program right through.
If at any time you need a break, try the TT Bodyweight 4-week plan.
And then finish off with the bonus programs to cap off a full 24 weeks of Advanced TT fat loss workouts.

Bodybuilding Hormone Secrets
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

More today on the secrets of supersets...
In the past, I've mentioned supersets being effective simply because they save you time - and that results didn't depend on your heart rate (even though it gets jacked with supersets).

But recent research suggests another reason for the effectiveness of supersets - and that's the increase in Growth Hormone in your body.
GH, for those that don't know, is one of the hormones in your body that increases fat burning.
It's also one of the most popular scam supplements that you hear about in spam email.

So why is GH so popular?
Because everyone calls GH "the Fountain of Youth". It's supposed to make you lose fat and apparently make you look and feel younger...(and it must work - I was 'accused' repeatedly in NZ and Australia of being only 25 years old - almost 7 years younger than I really am - must be the TT lifestyle).
And that's why it doesn't surprise me that both interval training and high-intensity resistance training have both been shown to increase GH.
But the so-called GH boosting supplements aren't backed by science. On the other hand, I've been able to show you the science behind Turbulence Training. And not only science, but results too!

But now for some bad news...a recent study (from JCEM, 91: 678-, 2006, for any science nerds) showed that obese men burn fewer calories and have less post-exercise GH than normal men. And the obese men also had higher cortisol levels. AND the obese men burned fewer calories in the post-exercise period. That's a triple-yikes!
Three strikes against obese men...and possibly why some guys have a heck of time losing fat in the first place. Their hormones are out of whack to begin with - so its harder for their bodies to burn fat.
If you turn to a low-fat diet and lots of cardio, you aren't going to get the GH response that you would if you eat according to Dr. Mohr's TT fat loss guidelines and if you use the TT workouts.
So let's review the TT workout set-up that will get you more results in less time...I'm talking 3 workouts of 45 minutes per week that will blast your post-exercise metabolism through the roof and help maximize your hormonal response to exercise.
A - The Warm-up
We use three bodyweight exercises done in a circuit. This is a much better way to prepare for training than by walking slowly on a treadmill.
B - The Strength Training Supersets
This can be as little as one brilliant superset (DB squats + DB presses) if you have only 10 minutes, or up to 4 s
C - Intervals
Bodyweight circuits, stationary bike intervals, or running on the treadmill or outside, these are just a few of the ways we can do intervals for 10-20 minutes.
We don't need 40 minutes of slow cardio, or even 40 minutes of intervals.
There is still a lot to learn about interval training, but most research is using only 20-minute interval workouts to get major, much-better-than-longer-cardio results.
As I learn more, you'll learn everything.
So that's that. Eat according to Dr. Mohr's TT Fat Loss Guidelines to avoid the Western Lifestyle, and exercise and live according to the TT lifestyle, and you'll look and feel fantastic - and YOUNGER!

Short Workouts, Big Fat Loss
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

So many questions on TT, so little time. Here's a Q'n'A session all about the benefits of Turbulence Training.
Q: Craig, could you explain to me why long slow cardio doesn't really work for fat loss and how your system of training has helped thousands of people shed fat and gain lean muscle?
CB:
First, let me clarify my opinion of "cardio" and "aerobics". I know slow cardio can work for fat loss, but those who get the most benefit are often young, heavily muscled males with time on their hands and genetics on their sides.
They can workout 6 or 8 hours per week and have lots of muscle so even if they lose a bit, it won't matter.
But for people that only have 2-3 hours total exercise per week and want a buff body, rather than a skinny, weak physique, I have found that slow, traditional cardio is not the way to go.
Slow cardio is just not efficient for overweight women (i.e. those
that use it most!), and slow cardio works less the longer you use
it. You'll hit a plateau pretty fast with a cardio-only approach.
Those are my observations.
And realize that when I talk about training for fat loss, I'm
almost always talking about getting the most results in the least
amount of training time - because that is the population I deal
with. I don't work directly with fitness models that have 8-10
hours per week to train. Things might be different there,
especially the closer you get to the competition.
But for real life, slow cardio is one of the last places I would
turn for fat loss help.
And because there are millions of men and women out there with little time to train but a real need to lose fat. Because there are so many of these people out there that have relied on slow cardio in the past, when they switch to the Turbulence Training approach, it's an almost overnight success story. Hence the high volume of great feedback we have on the program.
Q: We live in a very fast paced society. People don't have the extra time for anything these days, especially long workout sessions. Can people get real results with training programs that only take 10-30 minutes?
CB:
Certainly - as long as their nutrion is correct for 167.5 out of
168 hours per week.

That's right, nutrition is the real key to fat loss. With training,
all you need to do is apply a relatively small amount of
high-intensity exercise to your muscles and you'll sculpt them or build them, whatever your goal.
High-intensity exercise (strength training and interval training)
ramps up your metabolism more than slow, marathon cardio training sessions.
And with training, there is a diminishing return on every set. So
you can't expect 4 sets to be twice as good as 2 sets. As long as
you get in 1 hard set, you are on the way to fat burning and
bodysculpting. Then just add volume as needed and as you have the time.
Q: Can you explain "turbulence" and how it ties into real fat loss and body transformation?
CB:
What happens is this...
During high intensity training, you apply "turbulence" to your
muscles. That causes muscle/protein breakdown and glycogen
depletion (which can be called "cellular disruption").
This increased cellular metabolic activity results in "afterburn" -
that is, the burning of more calories after high-intensity exercise
than you would have burned after low-intensity exercise such as slow cardio.
So even though you might burn more calories during a slow cardio workout (say 500 calories) compared to during an equal length high-intensity Turbulence Training workout (say 350 calories), you will burn a lot more calories after the high-intensity training session.
The net result is more calories burned in the 24 hour period with high-intensity training. Combine that with the muscle-sculpting benefits of strength training, and you'll have a better body in less time. Guaranteed.
Q: I have female clients that struggle with the notion of training with resistance because they think they will get bulky...how does you TT system work with women and what kind of results have you seen?
CB:
There are a couple of simple changes you can make to avoid "bulking up".
First, let me state that generally, muscle growth is the result of
training with enough volume at the right intensity, and eating a
high-volume of calories.
Obviously, the calorie volume should be low on a fat loss program.
Next, we aren't using split routines (i.e. where you train one body part per day), so generally we are using only one exercise per muscle group. That cuts down the volume by 2/3 in most cases (as split routines often use 3 exercises or more per muscle group).
So we've eliminated the volume to avoid excess muscle growth, but kept the intensity high to reap all the benefits of Turbulence.
One other method I use in my workouts to avoid "bulking up" females is bodyweight training. There are many tough bodyweight exercise that provide low-risk Turbulence. Women love the variety in bodyweight training.
Q: Can people do your system in their homes with limited equipment and be just as successful?
CB:
Absolutely. The TT fat loss programs were designed for home gyms equipped with only a bench, an exercise ball, and dumbbells (and a pullup bar for those that are strong enough).
That's it. I designed the workouts for home gyms (as well as to be done in busy gyms) because that is how the real-life clients I deal with have to workout.
Q: Craig, I have done your workouts and they have kicked my butt, but I also left feeling better and with more energy then I had before I started. Is this a normal response you get from people that use your system?
CB:
Yes, definitely, although it can also be said of exercise in
general.
Regardless of what exercise method you use, simply moving should increase your mood and energy - essential at this time of year as the glow from the holidays recedes and the Northern hemisphere enters its winter dormancy.
Q: What are your recommendations for keeping the fat off during busy times of the year, such as the holidays or vacations?
CB:
Start your day with your workout, so that you don't get pulled into something later on that will cancel it out. Even if all you can do is a bodyweight circuit, do so safely, but with a high intensity.
There is a huge variety of bodyweight exercises you can do...these will boost your metabolism.
Beyond that, stick to your nutrition as much as possible. That
means tossing (yes, literally throwing out the junk that surrounds you) excess calorie sources away when they are not warranted. Don't keep stuff at your work desk.
Enjoy quality food at parties, but not while you go through
a regular workday.
And don't fret if you only have 20 minutes to do a workout. Now
that you know intensity and quality are more important than volume, you can be satisfied with working hard for a short period of time.
Make your workouts fun, enjoy your treats in moderation, and stay active with family activities where appropriate - don't leave a big ol' "butt imprint" on your couch or beach chair.
Do all of this, and you'll be riding a huge wave of motivation into
the new year where you can really kick butt on your fitness goals.
Sincerely,
Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS

"I am a 44 year old mother of 2. I have been struggling for the
last 8 years (since my youngest child was born) to return to my
toned shape. Nothing has worked for me until giving TT a try.
After spending hours upon hours in a gym and spending way too much time running and doing other things that will eventually wear out my joints, I gave in and decided to accept that I should age gracefully. NO WAY! I decided to try TT and cannot believe the results. Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge. It can truly change your attitude and life."

"I purchased the TT training manual about a month ago and have been following it ever since. It makes so much sense and i really enjoy the different workouts so never get bored the body weight workouts are cardio in disguise as i find i burn just as many calories if not more from a BW session as i do with the TT cardio session. I am sore in places i have never been sore and find i push myself just to prove i can do the moves and love it. From an aussie that was looking for something other than just another weight workout with the same old moves this has been a real eye opener for me and i have been telling my friends just how great the TT method is."
Kelli Tomkins, Australia
"I am actually getting twice the results in half the time. As a
serious gym junkie with little imagination finding your workouts
has been a welcome breath of fresh air. I no longer feel bound to
the gym struggling for the smallest result. My body and I are in
this together now. Your workouts are interesting and make me feel strong in practical ways. It's more like a game of testing my
capabilities, not another boring workout. On top of that I can't
praise your customer service highly enough, you have been amazing! I never expected such quick personal responses to my emails. For the price I paid, I have received so much more than I anticipated. Many thanks and all the best."
Heidi Sinclair
"Craig, got my 6-week bodyfat test lost 10lbs of fat and gained 6lb of muscle, im proving you can lose fat and gain muscle at the same time with your TT workout system, and nutrition plan."
Desmond Hardison, NV
"Hi Craig, I am enjoying Turbulence Training. I am a personal
trainer, so I've incorporated much of it into my sessions. Though
I used some philosophies from TT, your program has added a world of new ideas, methods, and techniques to my client sessions. And for that, I thank you so very much. Even my wife loves it, ha! So much more to read and implement, so TT reading will keep me busy for many months to come. Make it a great day!"

Your 3 Fat Loss Mistakes
By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

Let me solve your workout problem.
I know that you are:
- Eating well
- Exercising regularly
- and TICKED OFF that you aren't making progress.
I've answered dozens of emails from new readers that have said exactly that. And after I get more info from them, here are the 3 mistakes commonly made:
1) Your perception of your nutrition "success" doesn't match the
reality of what, when, and how often you are eating. To learn the rules of fat loss, you need to read (scratch that, you need to
STUDY), Dr. Chris Mohr's Fat Loss Nutrition Guidelines.
2) There is no variety in your training.
3) You need to up the intensity of your training.
Let's face it. Human beings like to stick to a routine. We don't
like change. We like our comfort zone - some more than others.
But if there is no change in your workout from month to month, then your body will not change either.
That is why I insist on changing your workouts every 4 weeks as you do in the TT workouts.
You won't succeed by doing the same thing over and over again.
Would you get ahead at work by doing the same tasks you did as the first day on your job? No way. You have to take on more challenges.
With variety in your training, you will continue to apply
"turbulence" to the muscle, and making your body use lots of energy (i.e. calories and fat) during the recovery period to repair the muscle and replenish the energy used. That will "jack up" your metabolism.
If your body is used to the training, the exercises, the sets, and
the reps, it will give a "ho-hum" response and your metabolism will flatline.
And that's why you need to raise the intensity of the workout as
well.
Slow, boring cardio doesn't jack up the metabolism like intervals.
And research has shown that 8 reps boost your post-workout
metabolism more than 12 reps. So you have to safely add a little
weight (try using 5% more weight with perfect form, of course), and decreasing the number of reps per set by 2. That's a good place to start.
So if you've been doing a machine circuit, then stop, and give this sample free weight Turbulence Training workout a try.
Warmup with a bodyweight circuit. 8 reps per exercise, go through it twice.
Sample bodyweight circuit:
i) Bodyweight squat
ii) An easy pushup
iii) A bodyweight row if possible, if not, do stick-ups
Then do 20 minutes of total body strength training done in
supersets.
ie.
1a) DB Squat
1b) DB Press
Do each exercise with a weight that allows only 8 reps. Do not rest between the squat and press. Rest 1 minute after the press. Repeat the superset 2 more times.
Next superset:
2a) DB Split Squat
2b) DB Row
Same as above.
On to intervals:
5 minute warmup.
6 intervals of 60 seconds at a "harder than normal cardio pace"
with 60-90 seconds recovery (at the easiest pace possible).
5 minute cooldown.
Stretch tight muscles only.
Done.
We don't do slow cardio. It does nothing for the man or woman who is short on time.
And of course, always train safe and don't do anything you are not comfortable doing...but if you are fit and healthy, you can
increase the intensity, change the variables, and burst through
your fat loss plateaus.

Think Yourself Thin

By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

To lose fat, one must think. One must exercise their brain to change their body and reach their weight loss goals. If you have a plan, you'll succeed. But if you go in the gym and "wing it" everytime, you'll make no progress month-in and month-out. If time keeps on passing without any changes in your body, then you have to try something new.
Everytime I workout, I see the same people doing the exact same exercise routine in the gym. They go through the same machines in the same order using the same weight each day. Then they go to the same piece of cardio equipment and use the same level as yesterday and go at that same slow pace as always.
And do you know what I see the next day?
The same old physique on that same person. No change. Next week? No change. Same workout, same body.
Because they aren't thinking. And no one is thinking for them. They don't have a good trainer, or a good program, or a good idea about what they should be doing in the gym. They've heard that "cardio" is good for them so they go to the gym and try out a cardio machine.
But they just get on it and "go", mindlessly. Maybe they throw in some weights. Maybe not. They don't really know how to do weight correctly anyways. And so it goes on and on, week after week. Until they just give up and quit.
And you see the same thing on the street. You see the same people running the same slow route around the neighborhood, getting the same (read: zero) results from their "same old-same old" jogging routine.
I've always believed that beginners to fitness take up jogging because its easy. And I don't mean easy on the body, because we know it takes some effort.
I mean that jogging is easy on the mind. Runners don't have to think. They don't have to plan a program. They don't have to pick the best, efficient strength training exercises and then put them in the proper order in an effective routine. Instead, all they have to do is put one foot in front of the other.
But, and there is always a but, isn't there? That easy, no-thinking approach is not going to get them very far. After ten days, there probably won't be much change in their body.
And the same goes for those high-rep, low weight, machine circuit programs. No thinking required, no results guaranteed.
However, if they had exercised their brain and designed a strength and interval workout, they would have seen some startling changes in 14 days, or 10 days, or even 7 days. (Heck, I've had guys swear that they noticed changes in their bodies after only 2 days of strength and interval training).
Because you see, planning a workout takes effort. And going through an effective workout of efficient strength exercises and interval training takes even more effort.
But you get out what you put in. That saying goes for just about anything in life, especially for workouts.
So the choice is up to the exercisers in the gym I guess. If they stay in their comfort zone, it will be easier on their body and their mind in the short-term. But over the long-term, they'll probably drop out of the fitness scene as they find they never get the results they want.
Or they can put in the short-term effort, researching the best program for their goals. And with this approach, you get the long-term payoff of success.
Look into strength and interval training and see what the extra mental effort can do for you. Using the Turbulence Training plan of an efficient bodyweight warmup, effective structured strength training supersets, and maximum result interval cardio to complete the workout will get you more fat loss results in less workout time. Guaranteed.

7-Minute Weight Loss Circuit

By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

One thing we have to lose from our workout mindsets is the idea of this "60-minute workout". Forget about spending that much time in the gym. Instead, choose better exercises that are more efficient. This will allow you to get your workout done faster, eliminating the "no time" workout excuse.

To do so, you need to eliminate irrelevant exercises. I know you want to do an exercise for shoulders, and one for arms, and one for abs, and one for this and that. But before you do, ask yourself, will these really get me to my goal, or have I just been convinced by bodybuilding magazines that I need 40 sets per workout to get results?
Now, taking those lessons, we can then create some pretty incredible bodyweight workouts as well. And these bodyweight workouts can get finished fast!
In fact, here is a 7-minute bodyweight circuit that can help you lose weight, burn calories, and blast your metabolism. You don't need machines or weights. You can do this anywhere!
Bodyweight squat (10-20 reps)
Pushup (10-20 reps) - do it on your knees if you must
Reverse Lunge (10 reps per leg)
Plank (30 second hold)
Close-grip Pushup (10-20 reps)
Side Plank (20 second hold per side)
Mountain Climber (10 reps per side)
Do this with no rest between exercises. Rest 1 minute at the end of the 7-minute circuit and repeat up to 3 times.
If you are a beginner, do fewer reps and take longer rests.
It's a tough, tough bodyweight circuit, especially the combination of two exercises late in the circuit. This combo literally exhausted me to my knees...twice...before I was able to finish the circuit. You can do the circuit up to 3 times.
Another weapon in your fat loss arsenal. Now you'll know how to train efficiently and eat effectively for fat loss.
Don't wait any longer to get started! Get all of these bodyweight exercises, and more, in the Turbulence Training workouts that you can do in the comfort of your own home. No more annoying drives to the gym, waiting in line for machines in an uncomfortable environment, or being intimidated by the super-buff gym bunnies. Lose fat, get fit, and workout your way - at home with only a bench, a ball, and dumbbells.

Best Cardio Machines for Weight Loss

By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

You don't have to do cardio to lose fat, but cardio machines can be helpful for boosting your metabolism and burning more fat.
And if you use interval training, you can get more results than if
you did traditional aerobic cardio. But that's another story for
another time. Let's take a look at which machines burn the most
calories and which ones are worth your time.
An okay choice: Elliptical Machines.
The biggest reason to choose elliptical machines...
=> you've got a bum knee.
I have worked with clients with extreme osteoarthritis and we
were able to use these machines for a decent workout without pain - but the results didn't compare to clients that used a stationary bike or treadmill for their interval training.
So in general, I'm not overly impressed by the elliptical machine
for fat loss.
If you go into any gym, compare the bodies on the ellipticals to
the ones on other machines...most of the time, the people on the
ellipticals make no progress from month to month.
And having given the elliptical a "go" once or twice on my own, it
just didn't challenge me as a treadmill does.
But if you have bad knees, or if you are an exception to my
experience, feel free to keep rocking the elliptical!
Up next...The Stationary Bike
The bike can be easy on your knees as well, particularly if you are overweight and can't support your bodyweight on the treadmill.
Personally, I like the stationary bikes a lot. The set up allows
you to do a large amount of mechanical work during your interval training - and that is what puts Turbulence on the muscle and allows you to increase your post-exercise metabolism.
In fact, when I first started designing the interval workouts back in 2001, I used stationary bikes exclusively.
I also think that the bike allows you to work very hard with less
risk of injury. Running sprints outside or on a treadmill requires
a much more extensive warm-up due to the explosive nature of
sprinting.
If you don't know your body, running sprints or hills probably
isn't the best place to start. I've met too many people that have
jumped right into hill training and been hurt within 1 week.
sprints.
So I recommend starting with the bike unless you are an experienced runner that knows your body well.
In addition, here are three more key points about the bike.
a) Stick to the upright version if possible. When using a recumbent bike for intervals, your hips tend to rock too much and your body tries to get into awkward positions in order to push hard against the resistance. That's my experience. The upright bikes are set up better for intervals.
b) For intervals, increase the resistance against your pedalling,
and not the speed of your pedalling. I don't like high RPM
spinning. I think you'll get more results and do more work when you keep the RPM between 80-100 and work against a harder resistance.

Forget that high-RPM spinning stuff...I find it is rough on your
hips and knees.
c) When on the upright bike, sit as upright as possible for the
recovery intervals or even stand for some of the work intervals.
Just avoid the "rounded over" posture as that can be hard on your low back.
So the winner is...The Treadmill.
The treadmill can burn 16-20 calories per minute of exercise
during your workout. That's a big burn, but of course only advanced fitness levels can achieve that - but hopefully you fit that category now or you will someday with consistent training and nutrition.
Some tips: Don't go crazy with the incline (as that can lead to
tight calves), but if you are able to run at more than 10mph, use a 1% incline to help offset the need for speed. The last thing
you want to do is end up in a crazy video on YouTube flying off the end of a treadmill into an elliptical machine.
So as with all types of sprinting, be careful.
Honorable mentions go to...The Rowing Machine and
Stairmaster...these can be used in place of other machines for
variety and are still effective.
Better yet, if you are able, use your body as the best fat burning
machine. I highly recommend bodyweight circuits for interval
training. These are fun, effective, and perhaps even better at
sculpting your body.
I really like bodyweight interval circuits for advanced
fat-burning, plateau-busting workouts. If you're stuck, you'll
benefit from bodyweight circuits.

Cardio Weight Loss Mythbuster

By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

Here is the Myth:
You have to do cardio after lifting for fat loss because your glycogen is low from the lifting, and that way you will burn more fat.
And now, the Truth:
First off, this quote, "glycogen is low right after lifting" isn't always true. If you just did an upper body workout, your legs are still full of glycogen.
Glycogen is the stored form of carbohydrates in our body (found in the muscles and liver). It is one source of energy when you are doing strength training, interval training, and aerobic training. Your glycogen levels go down after exercise, but increase after you eat carbohydrates.
It's incorrectly believed by many that strength training will use up all of your glycogen and then you will only have fat to burn during slow, steady, monotonous (& useless?) cardio. Well, there are a lot of problems with that assumption as well.
First, you'd have to exercise for at least 90 minutes at a slow, steady pace to fully deplete your muscle glycogen. And even an advanced, higher-volume strength training workout will only deplete your muscle glycogen by about 50-70% (and that is only if you perform multiple exercises and sets for one muscle group).
Second, muscle glycogen only goes down in the muscles that are worked. Therefore, if you only do upper body exercises, your leg muscles will remain nearly full of glycogen.
Third, you require glycogen in order to perform a hard interval or cardio training session. If you truly were glycogen depleted, your workouts would suffer.
The bottom line is that you are better off performing strength training and interval training to lose fat, and not worrying about being glycogen depleted.
Don't get suckered into thinking that you have to worry about scientific details. Unless you are a trainer, you have better things to occupy your mind, I'm sure. Just stick with an efficient, effective workout that gets you in and out of the gym in less than an hour.
No need to stick around longer than that. Do your weights and then your intervals. Or feel free to do your intervals on your off-day. It's consistency, not timing, that matters.

How Fat Loss Lies Stop Your Success

By: Craig Ballantyne, CSCS, MS
www.TurbulenceTraining.com

Are fat loss lies ruining your chances of success?
I sincerely hope that your 2007 workout and nutrition plan is
already wildly successful and that you are well on your way to
achieving your fat loss and fitness goals. But if you aren't, let
me know why and what I can do to help.
Many people's programs suffer from misconceptions about fat
loss - i.e. that cardio must be done everyday - and also false
perceptions about how well they are eating.
I've reviewed hundreds of client evaluations forms in my career,
and just recently I reviewed 5 more for a transformation program we are working on over at Men's Health magazine.
And time and time again I see the same problem.
I have one question on my feedback form that asks the client:
"Do you eat lots of fruits and vegetables?"
Almost everytime the client's answer is "Yes".
On the next page, I have the client list their food intake.
And guess what rarely shows up?
If you guessed fruits and vegetables, you'd get a prize if I were
giving them away.
There are too many inconsistencies in our thoughts and actions when it comes to weight loss.
And the misguided notions that well-meaning fitness articles heap on us simply adds to the ever-growing confusion.
Here I want to shed some light on some of the most common
misconceptions about training and dieting for fat loss.
The more I discuss weight loss and read the research, the more I realize fat loss results come from your nutrition, and that
training is just a relatively small part of the equation.
But knowing this "truth" allows me to confidently design shorter
fat loss workouts than most people traditionally use or expect are necessary.
Listen, you can spend 60 minutes on a cardio machine if you want. Sure you will burn 500 calories during that session, but your metabolism won't be significantly elevated after exercise AND you'll still have to find some time to do the mandatory strength training that a beautiful and healthy body requires.
Or you can do what I suggest...
Scrap the long, slow, excruciatingly boring cardio workouts and
instead stick to a much more manageable approach of...
A bodyweight movement warmup (5 minutes)
Turbulence Training Strength Training Supersets (20 minutes)
Turbulence Training Interval Training (20 minutes)
Done only 3 times per week, these 45 minute workouts still burn plenty of calories during training (300-400 calories), but the workouts also boost your metabolism for hours and hours (some research suggests up to a day and a half!), therefore burning far more NET calories AND fat than slow, mind-numbing cardio.
All you really need are some short intense training sessions to
boost your metabolism and sculpt your body. And then you really just have to trust your nutrition to strip the fat.
Look at it this way...imagine you are carving an ice sculpture out
of a block of ice. Your nutrition would be responsible for lopping
off the big chunks to get down to only the amount of ice you
need...and the Turbulence Training workouts would be responsible for chiseling in the details of your final sculpture.
As no matter how much confusing information there is about
exercise, the debate over the best way to eat for fat loss is
always much more ridiculous.
(That's why I went to a credible and sensible source - Dr. Chris
Mohr, Ph.D. - for the TT Fat Loss Nutrition Guidelines.)
As far as dieting misconceptions go, I think too many nutritionists are trading political correctness for results. In my opinion, PC diets don't work.
Take a look at the American Diabetes Association...they still make room for sugar in a diabetic's diet - because they don't want to deprive anyone of sugar.
Well that's not going to work. You have to make sacrifices. You
have to stick to at least a 90% nutrition compliance if you want
big-time results.
You can't go with the political correct approach of "having a
little bit of your favorite foods everyday so that you don't
deprive yourself".
Think about the person that has your dream body - whether it's a cover model, your neighbor, a TV star, or the fittest person down at your gym. Do you think they haven't made sacrifices? Of course they have. They've done the work to get their reward.
Now its your turn!
You have to get strict and stick to whole, natural foods (fruits,
vegetables, meat, fish, and nuts) if you want to succeed.
You need to accept that every action has consequences...
If you want to live a lifestyle where you don't deprive yourself of
daily treats, that's fine. But realize the consequence of this
action will be that you will always remain a few pounds of fat away from your goal.
According to your actions, you value your treats higher than you
value your fat loss success.
But if you place your desire for fat loss success above your desire to eat junk, than the consequences will be that you will reach your body composition goals. It's that simple. We all get what we deserve and unless someone is holding a fork to your mouth, you are responsible for your own success.
And my last "non-PC" tip on dieting...almost all the people that
tell me they are eating very well are lying to themselves and to
me - as I mentioned before based on my client feedback experiences.
So do what Dr. John Berardi calls a compliance grid. Take a piece of paper and make a 6x7 grid (6 meals over 7 days). Then check off each time you eat according to plan and mark an "X" for each time you miss your goals.
Realize that you only have 4 mistake meals for an entire week if
you want to stick to the 90% compliance.
Most of the time this is a bucket-of-cold-water-to-the-face wake up call to people. They quickly realize their nutrition compliance is much closer to 75% than 90%...and that explains why they aren't getting anywhere.
So the bottom line for fat loss:
1) Nutrition is where the hard work really is for fat loss.
2) The workouts don't have to be super-long to get fat loss
results. You just need short, intense, and efficient. And that's
what my workouts are all about. Nothing fancy, no rocket science, just FUN workouts that are over quickly...and who wouldn't want that considering today's busy lifestyles.
Sincerely,
